Read Daily News Reporter Brendan Bosh's story on a dog breeder who has drawn the ire of animal lovers and the scrutiny of state law enforcement officials for running what a former customer described as a "house of horrors".

Update on the above story: The "breeder" in the Daily News story lost her License to sell dogs!

URGENT!!! We have to raise $2500. to repair Mattie's double crusciate ligament tears. We have one month to do it . The next four weeks Mattie will be on crate rest, so her front leg can finish healing. Then we can get her surgery done. She is now on pain medication, so she is at least not dealing with pain. Mattie is one of the sweetest Bullies we have ever had, she is still a baby, and has known pain, abandonment and hunger. Please help her walk again.
UPDATE  11/6 Mattie is busy building bone, growing, and just being a puppy. She is very good about her crate rest, now that she has discovered toys, she puts "her" toys in her crate. You have raised $2500, for her surgery! Check out how she is doing on her page! Big thanks to everyone who is helping Mattie to be able to run and play like the puppy she is! Mattie needs an orthopedic bed. If anyone has a memory foam bed they would like to donate that would be appreciated. She will be going to Atlantic Coast Vet Dr. Gilley early next week to see how she is doing on her bone building project so we can get those ligaments repaired.
UPDATE 11/15: Mattie was due to get X Rays and possible surgery last week, depending on how strong her front leg was. I had carefully removed all food and water the night before. As I was speaking to a vet about another dog, I heard crunching... Mattie had dragged out a BIG bag of food, and had helped herself to a buffet breakfast. Foster Mom had clearly forgotten to feed her! No anesthesia after eating! So, we will get a new date tomorrow. New pics on her page.
UPDATE 11/23 : Last week Mattie was supposed to see her Dr.,but, there were a few emergencies, so we put it off until the week after Thanksgiving. Mattie wishes her many friends a happy Thanksgiving, and wants them to know how grateful she is for their love and good wishes.

LIZA was one of 200 + dogs that were rescued from a puppy mill , where she was crammed in a crate and used to produce puppies. Sometime, somewhere she was someones family pet, as she is comfortable with a collar, loves the couch, and is housebroken. Liza is missing parts of her lower jowels, her upper right eyelid, and her upper canines. It seems that she was used as a bait dog, someone likely smashed her upper teeth out, resulting in the injuries on both sides of her face. Someone probably realized that more money could be made from her puppies, than by letting her get killed by dogs. She is nearly blind in the eye with the missing lid.She has an old hematoma on her ear, a mammory tumor, and needs to be spayed. With all the terrible things that have happened to her, Liza greets the world with a wiggle and a kiss. We have rarely seen such a sweet and loving dog.
Liza will be having reconstructive surgery on her eyelid by Dr, Sapienza at LI Veterinary Specialists, after Dr. Haagenson, Nassau-Suffolk Animal Hosp. spays her, and removes the tumor.
We will be posting updates on Liza.
May 21 Liza wakes up with a spring in her step!
We got her some very nice canned food and she has been cleaning her bowl, and having less difficulty eating. She is starting to show her personality more. Yesterday LIBR Rescue Mac, a very small Bully who was adopted by his foster Mom Tricia, was lying on his back. Liza must have thought he was a hungry puppy, so she went over to him and offered him "milk" she is so sweet.
May 24, uh oh...Liza very afraid of fireworks! Spent a lot of time being cuddled and reassured by foster Mom. She prefers to celebrate Memorial Day with a quiet family bbq.

UPDATE!!!! Liza had her spay, and her mammary tumors removed. They were a very low grade tumor and her vet is not concerned. She does have another one on the other side, but it was too much surgery to put her through all at once to remove it too. We will monitor it . Liza has recovered very quickly, happy to reclaim her place on foster Mom's couch. She will get her eyelid repair November, her spay took a long time to heal because of the scar tissue from all her homemade c sections. We are now screening homes for this very special girl. We would like her to: stay on LI, have a family with Bully experience, have a fenced yard, and someone who is home a lot. She will need to be in a home where she is allowed on the couch.
UPDATE 10/24 Liza is going in for her eyelid reconstruction very soon. Her spay took months to heal due to all the scar tissue.

Lana update! Our girl is enjoying herself...feeling better. She has been enjoying country life. She had a sonogram, there are no masses. She does have a heart murmer and needs a cardiac workup. Her fur is starting to come back, she had a massive yeast infection, she has gained weight, her ribs are no longer visible. We are still checking her out, but her foster Mom Andrea Dayton tells us that she is acting more like a dog and having fun. All these tests cost money, even though our vets are very generous with discounts, it still adds up. If you can donate towards Lana's cardiac workup she would really appreciate it, she has a tremendous will to live and lots of spunk. UPDATE! Lana had her cardiac work up. She has a leaky aortic valve, and it seems that she has lupus, an auto immune disease. She is responding to meds, but she will probably stay at Shady Paws, as we will not be able to spay her. Lana is looking for a sponsor.

Please note that the Long Island Bulldog Rescue & BCA Rescue Network rescues only the purebred Bulldogs sometimes referred to as "English" or "British" Bulldogs. The AKC breed name is just “Bulldog”. There are other web sites and phone listings for organizations that rescue other bull-breeds, such as -- American Bulldogs, French Bulldogs, Boston Terriers, Olde English Bulldogges, American Pit Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, Bullmastiffs, and so on.

Welcome to the Long Island Bulldog Rescue website.

Long Island Bulldog Rescue is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization

Our mission is to help English Bulldogs through education, prevention, intervention and adoption.

We fulfill our mission by helping, healing, and homing  abandoned, neglected, abused, or released English Bulldogs.

Why do so many English Bulldogs need rescue?

·         They’re very popular.  English Bulldogs suffer from being very cute, very popular, and very misunderstood.

·         Many come from puppy mills.  Thousands of well-meaning people impulsively buy adorable puppies from the Internet, puppy stores or individual puppy brokers.  Those poor little pups often come from puppy mills from the US and Eastern Europe. Torn from mothers in their first weeks, they often have terrible health problems, genetic disorders, and behavior problems from bad breeding, neglect, and abuse.

·         Many have changes in family  circumstances.  Sometimes a bulldog’s family separates, suffers loss or illness.  Sometimes a member of the family enters the military.

What does Long Island Bulldog Rescue do?

  • Prevention
    • Help people learn to plan all pet adoption – including purchase -- as they would any other member of their family: with care, patience, and love.
  • Education
    • Conduct speaking engagements; Work with schools; Collaborate with other rescue organizations, such as the Mayor’s Alliance of NYC and the Bulldog Dog Club of America Rescue Network.
  • Intervention
    • Take and make calls/other communication with people in crisis; Complete all emergency rescue operations; Provide emergency pick up and evaluation; Give emergency and routine medical care, ranging from spay/neuter to bone setting to life-saving heart surgery;  Work with shelters, law enforcement, other rescue and humane groups.

·         Adoption

    • Maintain a data base of screened people waiting to adopt. Want to be considered?
    • Extensively interview and introduce dogs and people.
    • “Match” people with dogs in need of rescue so each enjoys a “forever” home and relationship
    • Provide follow-up support to ensure successful homing and finalize adoption.

WE ARE IN ALWAYS IN DIRE NEED OF FOSTER HOMES!

PLEASE think about being a temporary foster home! You will need to have an area where the newcomer can be separated from any other dog in the household and you must have dog experience.  Be a hero please give a bulldog a chance!

        Contact us at  bulldogrescue1@aol.com

                                             or 631-689-6245.

The following pages will tell you a little more about bulldogs.

Special Characteristics of English Bulldogs

Bulldogs are unique in their own little way.  They are the clowns of dogs.  Always doing silly things to make you laugh.  They are compassionate, loving animals who will steal your heart in no time.  (Please visit www.thebca.org for more information about our wonderful breed.)

Keep in mind that bulldogs are sensitive, even though they look tough! For example, they:

·       Overheat very easily due to the structure of their face.  It is important that they be kept cool in the summer.  If your bulldog is having difficulty breathing and is panting excessively you must cool them down at once.  You can use a cool shower, bath or hose.  Even feeding them ice will help cool their internal temperatures.  Do not plan to jog with your bulldog

·          Snore!  Loudly!

·          Can make a mess when they eat, or when they drink.

·          Have their own ideas about what they would like to do.  Many bulldogs would like to sleep on the couch with you all day. Many others are very active, and want to play.  A lot.  It is important to make the right match for you and the pup.

·        Need their wrinkles cleaned so that they do not get infections.

·        Need your love and attention.  They are a very social breed.

PLEASE Do Not Buy a BULLDOG over the Internet, from Pet Stores or from brokers.

It is best to buy from a reputable breeder.  It is worth the wait!  It is very important that you are able to meet the mother of the litter.

Only you can protect yourself and another innocent puppy from the heartbreak of needing to reach out to rescue because you have a dog who is suffering from horrible behavioral or medical problems because of bad breeding, neglect, or abuse in the first weeks of life.
